With a focus on New Zealands native botanical and bird imagery, West reflects in her paintings both a personal appreciation and ongoing concern for her surrounding environment. The beautiful extinct Huia bird is symbolic of the importance of our environment and what can happen if these habitats are destroyed. Flax, Kowhai, Fushsia and Ferns all feature. Colours are earthy and warm with splashes of reds and blues. She embellishes this palette with the use of gold leaf, creating an element of luxury and preciousness about her work. West is a full time artist, living in Kaiopoi, she exhibits widely throughout NewZealand and has many pieces in overseas collections.
