Madeline Beasley studied art in London and moved to New Zealand in 1968. She has held group and solo shows for more than ten years, while she also has a background as a graphic designer for television, and works as an illustrator. Her painted angels draw on Christian, Byzantine and Medieval iconography, but are more pagan than religious. Angels are normally male, but Beasley's female angels break with that tradition. They represent the world of women as mothers, scholars, nurturers, lovers. Each angel has its own character, often accompanied by fruit, flowers, books or perhaps a bird.
