Max Thomson was born in Wanganui in 1945 and has a long family connection with the countryside and the river. He moved with his family to Auckland in the early 1960‘s, where he became a full time, professional musician for three years, during which time became interested in photography; the fields of fashion, advertising and his personal portfolio became his career for the next  thirty five years. A long time interest in painting never faded and he was able to begin painting full time. Growing up in rural New Zealand has had a profound effect on his work, with Max returning again and again to the landscape for his inspiration.
