The works contain Tohunga, Atahu, Rongoā. Priest, Catholicism, stained glass landscapes. I sit within it, suspended in the Wā (space) of the red thread between grandmother and grandchild. Between those taken from their ancient spiritual traditions and those who claimed theirs was the only truth.

Te Kuri O Te Wao, my Tipuna, Tohunga, Princess. She was the first Māori woman to become Catholic, later to renounce it. She became Methodist to continue to practice Rongoā, bridging the space between Tikanga Maori and pakeha religion: Wairua and Holy Spirit; healing stream and baptismal font.
For me ‘Losing My Religion’ is as much about the loss of Maori religion through the generations, as about finding it. Going home to Waima finding Whakapapa and Turangawaewae, within Kahu flight, healing stream, spiritual guardian. My DNA’s whisper telling the stories that reside within my blood, through the tip of my paintbrush.
- Penny Howard
‘Broken Karo pod
children fall
grieve our voices
Walk in darkness
find our hands
nothing other’
‘Mourning releases light; photosynthesis of learning
Blooms trumpet our beginning and end, before
Missionary alphabet - gilded in blood’
