David Carson came to blade sculpture from many years of woodworking. His family saw milling business was the impetus for the change. Each blade has a limited life and after a week of hard use it is usually discarded. The blades are made of carbon steel, and essentially become scrap after their initial use. Carson saw the beauty in these rusting lengths and realized that they could be reused. Inspiration came also from his parents who used to weave baskets out of willow. This then led to Carson experimenting with the idea of trying to similarly weave with a 4 metre long rusty piece of toothy metal.
His first experiment took over four months to complete to his satisfaction, but opened the way for a new sculptural form. Carson has gone on to show and sell his work throughout New Zealand and Europe and his work can be found in many major collections, both domestic and corporate.
