Caroline Herdson This current series of Paintings by Herdson represents the horse as a protagonist. The horses are clearly involved in wedding like rituals. There is a sense of them belonging to a structured society. By using horses instead of people the theatrical nature of the ceremonies is highlighted. Just as the female horse-figure has a veil as her accessory or prop, the male horse figure has his blood. The blood gives the work undertones of violence, sadness and tragedy. However these undertones are battling with the subject matter-marriage, celebration, love and also with painterly qualities-which are striving for beauty rather than horror. In framed there is a sense of unease. The guests are not cohesive, loving, attentive audience. Some are blindfolded, wounded, turning away, smoking anxious. The caped savior could bestow blessings or pass on by.
